Issa Rae is hilarious! Right out of the gate she will have you laughing as you read her book; The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. She is frank and sincere. Issa details her life growing up in Los Angeles after moving from her birthplace in Africa. The transition between home and her new home in LA is a lively one that the average woman who is still connected to her youth can relate to. Seeing that its based in LA, we will truly appreciate the local feel of the book!

Some books should be required reading for all and The Color of Law is one of these books. Author, Richard Rothstein has researched the history of redlining and the structural and institutional racism that has kept Black American DOS people from obtaining equality and equity through segregation and various forms of racism and discrimination. The Color of Law provides you with a detailed overview of the many injustices that have been carried out to result in forcing an entire group of people into the bottom cast within the U.S. and how this systematic oppression continues today.

This book is a great companion book to The New Jim Crow and Medical Apartheid

Let's Read

AWESOMELY LUVVIE did an amazing job on her debut book, I'm Judging You - The Do Better Manual. I listened to it on Audible, but I purchase the e-book as well. Luvvie checks each of us on a variety topics include weight shaming, racism, dating choices, and much more. She's direct and funny! I laughed out loud on the road, at my desk at work, and while I was shopping. And I had several, "Girlllll" moments.

If you haven't picked up a copy, don't wait! Get it today, you won't be disappointed.

Having been through a divorce and being an adult off-spring of divorce, I openly admit that I have some issues with myself in regards to romantic relationships. When I discovered Esther Perel on YouTube I immediately fell in love with her. Interestingly enough the majority of her views and insights put many of my internal questions to rest and spoke to the pain that I have been carrying. She gave me explanations for how my parents' divorce was handled and why I took on some of the responsibility for what happened and how that was not my purpose. I finished the book with a liberated view of relationships that appreciates the present and no longer requires ownership that binds my partner.

Mating in Captivity is a resource for all who are wanting to have a healthy romantic relationship.

Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey, Told by Christian is the follow up to the Fifty Shades Trilogy.

This book speaks from the view of Christian Grey. Yes, he is a jerk! Yes, you will learn how he plotted to seduce Anatasia. And you will hear him speak of his abusive childhood with is mother and his sexual predator. You will hear him rationalize his abuse as his love for Anatasia pushes him to acknowledge his abuse. This book will make the first book of the trilogy seem like cotton candy.

While the second book in the trilogy is my favorite, this is my next favorite. I'm looking forward to the next book from his perspective.

Yes! I read the Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy! I have no shame...thank you very much ;)

With all of the hype about its sensuality and sexual deviance I bite the forbidden apple and read (listened) the books on Audible. It was not what some said it was. It is a story of a man with an abusive past who is learning to love while living his life as someone who isn't fully healed from his childhood trauma. My favorite book was the second book because it took you into his desire to love and be loved. Honestly, the sex was just an accessory.

Check it out for yourself. Nothing to be afraid of...really!

Madame President's Recommendation!

The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander is an unapologetic look into the history of mass incarceration within the U.S. political and legal system. Ms. Alexander will educate you on how we have arrived to a time where the United States has one of the largest prison populations and who makes the most money as a result of incarcerating our most disenfranchised group of people; African Americans.

Take the time to learn the history of our country and the system that has played a role in the brokenness of our community.

Whoever said parenting was a piece of cake needs to be socked in the nose! It's hard! You are responsible for another human being for God's Sake! I read Parenting with Love & Logic when a friend Natalie Lamb of It's Your Choice recommended it to me. I was looking for help as I struggled with my pre-teen. Parenting expert, Jim Fey gives parents assurance that their child is not crazy (well really they are), but right on their developmental track. Parents learn to set reasonable boundaries that are based in empathy while strategically guiding their child.

Even if you're not struggling with a child this is a good resource for every parent.
